See the Need

I mowed the lawn today. This is usually Cooper's job, but between all the hours he's been working at Chick-fil-a and the crazy rainstorms we've been getting, he hadn't been able to get to it for a while. It took me five hours to do the whole thing, and that's after Cooper had put in about 30 minutes mowing before work.

Our lawn is not flat. The main part of the lawn has some gentle sloping. We also have a significant swale in the back. All of it had to be mowed today. This meant sometimes while mowing uphill, the lawnmower was higher than my head. It was hard physical labor.

By the time I finished at 5:00, I was exhausted and I ached all over. While I was nearing the end I noticed that Topher had come out onto the deck. He set-up some camping chairs, then brought out plates and his water bottle (mine was already on the deck). When I turned off the mower for the last time today, Topher informed me that he'd prepared a picnic for us. "I made you a corn tortilla! I got out a quesadilla from the bag and put cheese on it and cooked it for you."

I did not point out that some of those words were swapped. I love that he saw me working hard and wanted to show his love through an act of service. After I put the lawnmower in the garage and washed my hands, I joined him on the deck. It felt good to sit after such a long day. The company was pretty sweet too.

Bros

I looked over the other day to see all three boys standing in my bedroom doorway, hugging. So, of course, I took a picture.

Dandelion Days

I was looking back through post drafts that I'd started but never finished. I found this picture with this title from back when we lived in the Chicago area, about ten years ago. I remember exactly what it was about, even though I had never added text beyond the title.

Phoebe and Sophie were still young enough that they weren't in school yet. They spent a lot of time playing pretend and running around in the backyard. On this day Phoebe had brought me this bouquet of dandelions and they'd ended up on the counter, next to the toy hair dryer.

It struck me then how fleeting this stage would be, the time of gathering dandelions and bringing them to mom with love and wonder. I'm glad that, even in the midst of the overwhelm and tired, I was aware that I should pay attention and notice the importance of these tiny moments.

And it's true, we are past the dandelion days. Topher will still occasionally bring me one of the yellow flowers, but we've mostly moved on to other stages. I love watching my kids learn and grow and become who they have the potential to be. But there's a sweet melancholy thinking about the exhaustion and happiness of the days when they were little.

It's Not Even Mother's Day

I came out of my room one day this week and discovered these signs in the upstairs hallway, followed by the arrows down the stairs.

When I got to the great room Topher, Phoebe, and Cooper jumped out from behind the couch and yelled, "Surprise!" Then Topher handed out the hats he had made for us to wear and pushed play on the Megan Trainor song Mom that was cued on the TV. He said we were having a mom party and he invited us all to dance. When we finished the dance portion of the activity, he led me into the kitchen and gave me an "ice cream sundae" he had made for me. That's cottage cheese, in case you were wondering.

I thought it was so sweet of Topher to put this all together. And yes, I did cry a little.

Easter Fun for All

Sweet Topher thought it wasn't quite fair that Bryan and I didn't get to participate in the Easter egg hunt on Sunday. On Monday he set up a hunt for me. It included my own Easter basket full of fruit.

Rumor has it he's planning a hunt for Bryan as well.

A Beautiful Bouquet

Topher was really excited when he got in the van at the bus stop after school yesterday. I asked what was up and he said he had to find something. He then pulled nearly everything out of his backpack until he found his prize. He sweetly explained, "I wanted to bring you a bouquet of maple leaves." And then he handed me this leaf.

I graciously accepted his thoughtful offering.

Love Notes

I helped the boys deep clean their room yesterday. We found these love notes from Topher to Cooper. Topher is such an affectionate little guy. He loves writing notes and giving gifts.

All the Good Things

Topher had a particularly fun day today. He went on a field trip to the zoo with all the other first graders in his class. This meant he was outside nearly all day.

His mom, who usually says no to sweet treats, said yes to a microwaved s'more.

Not pictured: a very quick trip to the library, lots of reading, and cereal for dinner. These are all wins for Topher.

I Love You

Topher and I read a few Valentine's Day books before school today. I asked Topher if he could read this one to me. It's a rebus book, so many of the words were in picture form. When he got to the end the whole thing was written in words, sans pictures. He started to sing it to a tune that he made up on the fly and I asked if I could make a video.

With Topher's blessing, here's your singing valentine!

Maths

"Topher, algebra has lots of variables." - Phoebe, excited to explain the only math she enjoys, after discovering that Topher's math homework had early algebraic elements.

Close Enough

"Snow day!"

We had a near-whiteout flurry last night. It didn't last for long, but it was intense. The temperatures dropped into the teens, so the little bit of snow stuck. I didn't expect any more snow over night, so I was surprised when Topher looked out the front window and yelled out that we had a snow day. I joined him at the window and checked. This is what I saw.

There was snow, true. But not enough for a real, stay-at-home snow day. However, it was enough to make a six-year-old boy very happy.

Primary Program: Accomplished

Yesterday was the primary program.

I took this picture the night before to document some of our preparations. The folders held scripts, one for each adult that assisted, plus one for the podium. The index cards became name cards that I taped to the benches so all the kids and grownups would know exactly where to sit on the stand. Every kid had a primary program buddy, another primary kid to sit with. We paired a big kid with each little kid to facilitate reverence and tried to split up the busiest, chattiest children. We also asked the Bishopric to sit on the stand among the primary kids. They, along with our three primary teachers that were in town (which included Bryan), helped the kids stay calm while they waited for their turns to speak and sing.

All nineteen of our active primary kids were there and eighteen of them spoke their part clearly into the microphone. Our youngest and littlest sunbeam let me pick him up and hold him up to the microphone while I said his line clearly and he repeated in a low mumbly voice, "I don't want to." His older sister has an intense case of stage fright. We had a back-up plan for her part in case she wasn't up to delivering it. But she didn't need the back-up plan! She said her part into the microphone and did a great job!

I had taught all the kids the sign language to The Church of Jesus Christ. We practiced it for three months. Most of them did it last week at our final practice. Then almost all of them forgot it yesterday. A friend told me how much she enjoyed watching Sophie's sign language solo. Well done Sophie for remembering the sign language!

Sophie also had an official solo. The did a beautiful job singing the second verse of We'll Bring the World His Truth. This was her last primary program since she's turning eleven before the year ends. She was feeling kind of melancholy about that. Her solo was for her benefit, but also for mine. I realized I didn't have time to teach all three verses of that song to the primary kids. So instead I taught them the first and third verses and asked Sophie to take care of the middle verse. I'll miss her lovely singing voice and thoughtful responses next year when she's in Young Women.

I said that all nineteen of our primary kids were there, and that's true, but we actually had twenty-one kids participate in the program. There's a sweet family that started bringing their ten-year-old son and six-year-old daughter to primary in August. I never saw them in Sacrament meeting and couldn't find them in the ward directory. Someone had told me that Egyptian was their first language and that they were in another ward in the Stake. Someone else told me that they traveled between Virginia and Pennsylvania for work. The mom speaks very little English, so most of my communicating was with the dad. Even then, I didn't know much about them. I just happily welcomed the kids each Sunday and said hello to the parents when they came to take the kids home.

At the end of our second practice last week, the dad came up to me and asked what time he should have the kids there for the primary program. I told him I was so happy they could be there and gave him the time. Then I asked the kids if they wanted to have speaking parts also. They both said yes and we talked about a person from the Book of Mormon that they would want to talk about. The dad gave me his name and number so I could text him the parts during the week. Those were the only lines I wrote for the program, all the other kids wrote their own parts with the help of prompts. I felt that in this case, these kids would need a little more help.

They came yesterday, nervous but excited. Their dad told me that they travel for his job (I think he's a translator, but I'm not certain) so they've never been able to be in a primary program before. This was their first time. The kids both did a great job. The parents were beaming while watching their kids. That was one of the sweetest parts of the day for me.

Overall, I think it was a success. And I'm already planning for next year.

"Mom, let's take a picture." - Topher, delaying bedtime and still being adorable.

Dr. Topher

We got a book from the library a few weeks ago called Stop and Smell the Cookies. It's about a little boy who has trouble controlling his impulses. By the end of the book he's learned to smell the pretend cookies, blow out imaginary candles, and count to one hundred by tens. By being mindful he's better able to control himself.

Topher has used this calming method a few times since we read the book. It's quite effective. In fact, this week Phoebe was upset about something and this is what I heard Topher say.

Topher: Phoebe, would you like to smell the cookies with me? (inhales) Now blow out the candles. (exhales) And count to one hundred. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, one hundred. There, do you feel better now?

Phoebe: A little, actually.

Sacrament Meeting Love Note

I love Topher's end-of-Kindergarten writing.
