All Will Be Revealed

Sophie had to do a science project at home and make a video of it to turn in. Bryan helped her through the process. She demonstrated how to make and then reveal invisible ink. This was the message she wrote for her class:

Weird Science

Sophie, Topher, Bryan, and I attended the elementary school's steam activity tonight. The kids had lots of fun seeing if ketchup, hot sauce, or soy sauce did a better job cleaning pennies (spoiler: the hot sauce), making bouncy balls out of borax and corn starch, and building structures out of all kinds of materials. The evening did end with a meltdown, but it was bedtime and we probably should have seen it coming.

Stand Back, I'm Going to Try Science!

Sophie had to do a science experiment for school one day last week. Instead of insisting that Topher leave her alone to work, she invited him to join her. He loved getting to be a scientist with her. And I loved that I could make dinner while they worked (mostly) happily together.

The Rocket

Cooper earned his Bear in Cub Scouts and joined the Webelos just a bit shy of his birthday. I'm one of the leaders for that group, so it's been fun having him with me for the last few weeks. We've been working on the science pin, so last week we built rockets and this week we launched them.

There are three Webelos and they were joined by parents and siblings for the launch. This is Cooper's second attempt. His first one got pretty high, but the second went so far up that I lost sight of it. When the camera comes down, the siblings are all visible trying to catch the falling rocket in the distance.

About the Lion

I have been trying for years to get Peter to read The Chronicles of Narnia. I thought the fact that his name came from that book series would have been enough, but no. Finally this year he had to read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for school.

And suddenly he can't stop talking about it.

We told me that he wished he could tell the kids at school about all the things he discovered while reading. He knew that Aslan was a type for Christ, but he hadn't realized the significance of the stone table scene from simply watching the movie. He was bubbling with excitement while he explained so many deep and important subjects he found in the book that can't really be discussed in school.

I love seeing my kids excited about books that we both love.

The Geologist

Phoebe brought home a stack of colorful book order forms from school last month intent on buying something that had caught her eye. She had money left from her birthday, so she used it to buy this awesome excavation kit. She spent Saturday chiseling stone and brushing away dust in search of the precious stones hidden inside. Each of her siblings took turns assisting her. The kitchen was covered in a layer of dust by dinnertime, but they all had a ball.
