Line Upon Line

I've incorporated something new into the boys' scripture study. During breakfast (or sometimes lunch or dinner, depending on how cooperative everyone is, but usually breakfast) we read a chapter from one of these:

We've been doing this since Peter was born. I remember sometimes only getting through one panel a day. We're pretty good at reading a whole chapter at one sitting now.

Peter got this book for his birthday from Bryan's mom:

It's a compilation of some of the songs from the Children's Songbook, illustrated by well-known LDS artists, with additional information about the writing of the song or the person who penned it.

Now, after we read our chapter, I flip through the songbook and find something that corresponds topically. We're reading the New Testament right now. The day that we read about Jesus calming the stormy Sea of Galilee we sang Tell Me the Stories of Jesus. The third verse of that song retells the story we had just read.

I think adding the song helps us focus on the meaning of what we just read. And it gives the boys a chance to participate since Peter knows many of the songs and Cooper already knows a few as well.

What elements have added positively to your family scripture study?

Right now we're doing a "one verse per year of age" program of scripture study because Wes flat out refuses to participate in more. We're also trying to help him recognize Jesus, so after we read our two verses we look at pictures of Jesus and work on pronouncing "Jesus." And then we have family prayer. Which usually involves Wes screaming. I have no idea why it's sooo difficult. We only started a couple weeks ago..maybe it will get easier?

That's a good idea to follow up with the song. I think I'll start doing that. We actually bought the LDS Art book (not sure if that's really what it's called) and try to show pictures that correspond to whatever we're reading. It helps Thomas focus a little more.

Oh, and I never thanked you for commenting on my blog. I, like you, don't usually comment but you've inspired me to be a bit better at it so this is me trying. ;-)

I think these are great suggestions! We really need to step up our scripture study; it's never been good since we moved (and yes, we moved more than a year ago now). You've inspired me. :-)

I love learning how other mothers of young children incorperate scripture time. I grew up with and love the "scripture scouts" so I play that during our breakfast. Then before bed the kids get story time, and then our scripture time, which is singing the song they are learning in primary that month, then we all say (or try to say) the primary theme and scripture, and the article of faith they are learning that month, then read from the children's scriptures like you (usualy only one page), and then the kids take turns picking a favorite church song to sing, then we sing the "gather in a circle and kneel in family prayer" song as we get into the circle and then have family prayer.

These are good ideas(yours and the comments of the other mothers here)! Every night we start out by singing three church songs(or if it's Christmas time, three Christmas songs), each child choosing one (and we usually just do the first verse)

After songs, we open our gospel principle art books(the children each have their own that they can hold) and one of the kids will pick a picture(they take turns picking the pictures each day) and then either Scott or myself will tell the story in that picture and then read a couple key verses from the scriptures. Once that's done we kneel for prayer....and then just before they go to sleep we read each of them a story and sing another song(or two) of their choice in their individual rooms.
