The Orator

Peter gave a talk in Primary yesterday. We had a week to prepare which would have been great if I hadn't forgotten until Saturday afternoon. At least I remembered before Sunday.

I had asked Peter when he first got the topic (repentance brings forgiveness) what he wanted to talk about. At first he picked Laman and Lemuel. I said I wasn't sure they were the best examples of forgiveness. He chose Alma the Elder instead.

By the time we actually sat down on Saturday to write the talk he had changed his mind again and wanted to talk about Alma the Younger. I sat at the computer and told Peter I would type what he said. At first he wasn't interested in writing the talk himself, but he finally got the message that I wasn't going to do it for him.

We reviewed the steps of repentance. I opened Mosiah 27 and read aloud the account of Alma seeing the angel. I asked lots of questions about what happened to Alma and his friends, why it happened, what words he wanted me to type. Lots and lots of questions. He told me that the talk should end with his testimony, so that last line is all him. In fact, the majority of the talk is all him. I would guess it's a 70/30 split. He wrote 70% and I wrote 30%.

I think he did well.

Repentance Brings Forgiveness
Alma the Younger was bad. He led people away from the true church. Then an angel came and said unto him, Repent.
When you repent
  1. First you recognize that what you did was wrong.
  2. Then you say sorry to the person that you did the naughty thing to and ask them to forgive you.
  3. Next you do everything you can to fix the wrong choice.
  4. Finally you promise not to do the naughty thing again.
Alma was so surprised by what the angel said that he fell to the ground and couldn’t walk or talk. His friends carried him home. Alma’s father was the High Priest Alma the Elder. He was a good guy. He had been praying that his son would repent.

Alma the Elder gathered their family and friends to fast and pray that Alma the Younger would receive his strength and recover someday. After two days and two nights Alma the Younger stood and began to speak to the people.

Mosiah chapter 27, verse 24 says, “For, said he, I have repented of my sins, and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold I am born of the Spirit.”

Because Alma the Younger repented of his sins he was forgiven.

We can repent of the bad things we do and be forgiven as well.

And I know that the church is true. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

It's amazing how talks, especially if we memorize them, can come back to us when we need them. I bet Peter will find a use for these concepts in his life, even if he doesn't remember when he first learned them.
