One Down

We're done with our first week of school, tomorrow starts a four-day weekend.

Guys, we are SO TIRED.

Seminary hasn't even started yet, I don't have kids at home with me during the day, and I've just barely dragged myself to Thursday night.

I'm sleeping in tomorrow.

The Library Letter

A few weeks ago, after attending several library events in a short period of time, one of the librarians approached me with a request. She told me that our local congresswoman had nominated the library for a national award. The librarians were asking members of the community to submit letters in support of the library, to showcase the positive effects the it had on our population. Then she asked if I would write such a letter because she had a feeling that I would be able to craft a narrative. I assumed they were asking everyone they could and said yes.

That day she emailed me the details and criteria for the award. It turns out the library could only submit three letters of support. This both added pressure and relieved it. Surely, I thought, they've asked many people to write letters and this is just one that may or may not be used, so no stress. But also, didn't I want to write a letter that would get picked? That's where the extra anxiety came from.

I spent a few days last week brainstorming, writing, and editing the letter. I submitted it on Monday. I have no idea if they'll use it. But, since I spent time on it, I figured I should post it here. I'm editing out the actual name of the library (instead calling it Library) and my last name, but the rest is what I sent in. Thanks to my dad for editing the letter for me. And apologies to my dad since I only used about half of his edits.

Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services,

Yesterday morning I sat in a cozy, plush armchair, snuggled next to my nine-year-old daughter as she read a graphic novel. In a room downstairs my five-year-old son attended a kindergarten readiness workshop. From my vantage point I could see children reading with their mom, a girl drawing pictures with her parent, another child playing educational games on the computer, and two boys browsing shelves of books. These activities all happened in the children’s section of the Library.

Today I chose a different seat in the library. I’m in an open group meeting room. A woman is reading one of the library-provided newspapers. Another woman is halfway through a book that has engaged her, she’s eagerly leaning over its pages. There are two other women, both on their laptops like I am, one of them with books open next to her that she keeps referencing. None of us are the same age. We five represent several generations, all using this space together. This is a room of learning, of work, of contemplation, of gathering.

This is the room I come to every other Tuesday night for the library hosted Ukulele Orchestra. It's the room I brought three of my children to last month to learn about rescue animals. It’s not far from where they were taught how to set up a healthy and thriving fish tank, near where my budding author and artist daughter was inspired as she listened to a local author and illustrator, close to where my seventeen-year-old reconnected with his middle school librarian. I can see into the Teen and Young Adult section, my good friends Harry Potter and Percy Jackson painted on the wall. Beyond that I can see sunlit rows of the adult fiction collection.

Each time we visit this library, which is often, we leave with our arms full of books. Sometimes we pick up the new book we heard at storytime that week. Sometimes I see the beautiful displays of picture books and add a few to my bag. I think I’ve come prepared by bringing a canvas tote or two to carry our books, but without fail our literary treasures overflow the confines of those bags. We can’t resist getting just one, or two, or three more books. At the checkout desk I split our teetering stack of books among our multiple library cards, my version of a shopaholic spreading their purchases across credit cards. There are few things as sweet as the imagination fueled silence of the post-library drive home, everyone’s nose in a book.

In the few quiet moments I can find for myself during a normal day, I slip an earbud into my ear and jump into the latest audiobook I’ve borrowed from the library. The hundreds of audiobooks I’ve listened to in the last few years have been my companions as I folded laundry, trudged through dishes, painted walls, and ripped carpet out of our new home. These books were my friends during the profound isolation of a global pandemic. During that time when we couldn’t visit the library in person, we relied on the ebooks we checked out directly to our Kindles. Even when we weren’t able to leave our home, we were still able to visit new worlds through the library’s digital collection.

The Library serves our family and our community well. I know of several people that travel out of their way to visit this library for its books, its classes, and its other programs. The librarians are kind and helpful. When my teenage son mentioned the name of his favorite author, the librarians excitedly talked about their own love for his books. They make this a safe, welcoming place to be.

It’s almost time to retrieve my son from today’s kindergarten readiness class. I’ll pack up my computer and follow the dad and his teenage daughter that just passed me, a book clutched in her hand. I’ll pass the teenagers giggling in the next room, their books open on a desk in front of them. I’ll gather my other children and see how many books they’ve found to take home from this visit.

Oh how we love the library.

Best Regards,

Margot

The First Day Report

Everyone came home from school yesterday with things to report.

Peter gave me a rundown on which classes have friends in them and which teachers seem like they'll be good.

Cooper told me that high school is boring and there's no time to talk to anyone. He said he didn't meet anyone new, even when Peter tried introducing him to his friends. I challenged Cooper to introduce himself to one person in each class today, we'll see how that goes.

Phoebe didn't show up on any of her teachers' rosters and had forgotten where the before school choir class meets. This was stressful for her. She recognized lots of kids from her elementary school days, not all of those kids remembered her. But she did make a new friend!

Sophie said she was sad during recess until two girls in her class walked up to her and invited her to play with them. They're now, after one day, dear friends. She had glowing things to say about her teacher. She also was an integral part of the little boy next door going to his first day of kindergarten. He was in tears at the thought of leaving his mom to get on the bus. Sophie held his hand and had him sit between her Topher on their bus bench. As they drove she told him all about kindergarten and how much fun it would be. She also walked both Topher and our neighbor to the cafeteria where all the kindergarteners were supposed to gather. His mom and dad told me that they were so thankful that Sophie was there to help him.

Topher learned about how to be a bucket filler and how not to be a bucket dipper. He said the best part of his day was when a little girl in his class chased him around the playground. His teacher sent me a picture of the two of them today and said they're already great friends!

Bryan had a regular day of working from home, though he did get to walk to the bus with us in the morning.

And what did I do? Well, after the busy morning getting everyone out the door and my subsequent cry, I spent time writing and editing, I took a 30 minute nap, I attended a last minute meeting (at the park, my kids were not happy to hear that I went without them), then I came home and had lunch and talked with Bryan before meeting the kids at the bus stop. It doesn't sound like I accomplished much, but it was something.

First Day 0f School 2023-24!

Peter, Sophie, and Topher were excited. Phoebe and Cooper were anxious. I didn't cry until they were all on the bus and I was back home. So far, so good.

For the First Time in Forever

This is the last weekend of summer break. After the fullest, craziest summer we've had in years you'd think I was ready to have all the kids go back to school in person.

After all, this will be the first time in four years that all our school kids have been in person.

It's the first year all five of them will be in school.

It's the first time in almost eighteen years that I won't have any kids at home with me during the day.

I should be overjoyed, right? Except, I'm not. I'm happy that most of them are excited. I'm looking forward to having a few hours to accomplish some tasks on my own. I'm hopeful that a break each day will help me to be a calmer, less stressed version of myself. I'm genuinely looking forward to possibly taking naps. These are all good things.

I'm also anxious. Will Peter prioritize schoolwork over socialization and friends, especially as he applies to colleges? Will Cooper speak up and connect with other kids and make friends? Will Phoebe embrace her awesomeness and let her natural talents shine? Will Sophie find enough positive friendship and energy from her classmates? Will Topher follow directions and stay safe while he's at school? That's one concern for each child, but I have so many more swirling through my brain. Will I use my own time during the day wisely?

Topher and I went to the kindergarten open house last night. He'll have the same teacher that Sophie had in kindergarten. She's amazing! She has the same level of energy that all those five and six year-olds have. Sophie told me once that she's like a real life cartoon character and I agree in the best way possible. Topher is a lucky kid to have her as a teacher.

As we were doing bedtime a few days a ago Topher told me, "See, the thing is, I'm nervous for kindergarten." I thought that seeing his classroom and meeting his teacher would calm his concerns. As we left the school last night I asked if he was feeling any better about school.

Topher: No

Me: You're still nervous?

Topher: Yes.

Me: Are you nervous excited? Or nervous scared?

Topher: I'm nervous scared.

Me: Oh buddy, why?

Topher: Because I'm scared to do kindergarten without you there.

Yeah, me too.

Crayon World

Sophie had an Activity Day gathering at Crayola Experience this week. I had to drop her off and pick her up, and it had been a long time since the rest of the kids had visited, so I offered to take anyone who was interested while Sophie was hanging out with the AD girls. Peter opted to stay home, but the other three wanted to go. Cooper was concerned that he was a little too old to enjoy the activity, but it was still fun.

We were only there for two hours, so we hit the highlights. Everyone remembered the interactive boat display that shows how the canal lock system works. I had always wondered why this was part of a crayon museum. I overheard one of the employees say that display was part of the original museum that existed in this space before Crayola took over in the 90s. She also said the building itself is roughly one hundred years old.

Upstairs we melted crayons into fun shapes and attempted to do spin art. Phoebe's paper got caught and ripped away to the edge of the machine, so the crayons melted onto the metal plate meant to hold the paper. She got a second try and it worked. She still loved the ripped version though.

There were several Kubota vehicles on display as part of a promotion. That meant we had to take several pictures with those vehicles.

We ran into Sophie and the other girls while Topher played on a giant indoor play structure. Topher latched onto the girls and followed them as they were playing. That was his favorite part of the day.

When we were done we had to hurry out to the van before our parking meter was up. We happened to park next to this fun bike rack. We had just enough time to take a quick picture. It was a nice end to our quick adventure.

Magnetic Smile

Somebody at our house has a new smile.

She brought headphones and music to distract her from the process, she was pretty anxious about being in that chair.

"Phoebe, how do you feel about getting braces?"

She was a good sport about it though.

She has the top braces on now and will add the bottom set in October. And she hasn't eaten solid food since Friday morning, but hopefully that will change as the soreness goes away.

Happy Birthday to Us!

Today our family is twenty-two years old. That number is kind of mind boggling, especially considering that when we got married I was twenty-one and Bryan was twenty-two. We've been married about as long (or longer) than we'd been alive when we got married. That's crazy. Awesome, totally, but also crazy.

Because of some things on today's calendar, we had our traditional family birthday dinner last night. Our meal contributions were:

Bryan- chips and french onion dip

Me- watermelon

Peter- sushi

Cooper- frozen supreme pizza

Phoebe- egg crepes

Sophie- chicken salad on croissants

Topher- cupcakes

We added root beer floats as our drink, just for fun.

Sophie suggested that we go around the table and each say something that we love about our family, just like we do when it's an individual's birthday. We did and I loved hearing each person's thoughts. The members of our family love (in no particular order) that we eat dinner together, that we're musical and like to read, that we go on adventures, that we love talking to each other, that we ate cupcakes with our dinner, that we do things together, and that we have family movie nights.

Our personalities are just as eclectic as our meal and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I really love this family of ours.

Buoyant

We spent three and a half hours at our local pool yesterday and some of us have the sunburns to prove it. I didn't take any pictures at all since I was in the water and my phone was tucked away in my bag not in the water. I did take this picture the day before. We have a primary pool party coming up and I decided to buy this wearable floaty for Topher in anticipation of the activity. He wore it most of the day, and loved it, but adopted this face for the picture.

The point of this post is to say: THEY WORKED SO WELL! He wore them the whole time we were there and between these and the skills he learned in swimming lessons, he was pretty self-sufficient. I still stayed near him and kept my eyes on him, but I didn't have to hold on to him the time, which was a nice change.

Not-So-Secret Sauce

A week and a half ago I got a text from a friend in our ward saying they had too many apples on their tree and offered to let us come pick what we wanted. She warned me that they weren't good for eating, but made great applesauce. I took the four younger kids and some plastic bags and we visited while we picked apples. We left many apples that we couldn't reach and somehow still came home with 42 pounds of apples!

I found a no sugar, instant pot applesauce recipe and wanted to get started right away, but I didn't have all the needed equipment. Originally I was going to use our apple peeler/corer, then cook the sliced apples and mash them in the blender. But I wanted to use as much of the apple as possible, so instead I ordered an applesauce maker from Amazon and then waited for it to be delivered.

A few days after gathering the apples, we finally started the applesauce making. The last time I made applesauce was before Instant Pots were a thing. This was soooooo much nicer and more efficient than cooking the apples on the stove.

Several of the kids thought these were potatoes.

Even with the Instant Pots speeding the process along, this took several hours. I was down to the point of cooking the last batch when I made myself call it a night, well after midnight. This very cool tool did make the process easier.

The next morning we cooked and mashed the last of the apples. I had a few helpers.

Those 42 pounds of apples made 12 quarts of applesauce. I had discovered that my trusty canner that had been taking up space in the basement for many years could not be used on our glass cooktop. So instead of canning the applesauce right away, I stored it all in the fridge in the garage and waited for a new, flatbottomed canner to be delivered by amazon.

I was thrilled when it arrived, it was a thing of beauty. For real life. And then we looked up the manufacturer information on our stove top and found out that the pot was so big it could possibly crack the stove. Ugh. We returned it to Amazon.

Thankfully, we have a restaurant supply store nearby. They don't sell canners, but they do sell giant stock pots and steamer racks, and that's how I cobbled together a canner that would fit on my stove. I have ordered a proper canning rack to fit this pot, but it won't be here for a few weeks and I needed to get that applesauce canned while it was still edible.

Yesterday was the day! The hardest thing about the canning was that I had to warm the applesauce back up and I could only heat 4 quarts at a time in my second biggest pot on my second biggest burner. It took most of the day, but we ended up with 8 quarts and 8 pints. It's delicious, those apples really do make excellent applesauce.

An Apple a Day.

Sophie pulled out the water colors last week and created this awesome apple. Water colors baffle me, I really can't figure out how to use them properly. Maybe that's why I'm extra impressed with Sophie's work.

Part of the Process

Phoebe shared some of her latest work with me, including a few in-process shots. She usually shows me what she's drawn and points out the parts that she thinks are flawed. I see these pieces of art and am amazed at her skill and dedication. I think this is beautiful.

Old Fashioned Country Girl

Sophie asked to borrow my big, floppy hat for our walk yesterday morning. She thought it matched her dress so perfectly that she asked me to take her picture to document her cuteness.

You Oughta Be In Pictures

Bryan and I took the younger three to the library on Saturday for their end-of-the-summer-reading-program celebration. The theme for the summer was animals and participants were encouraged to bring their pets. Since the only pets we have are of the stuffed animal variety, that's what our kids brought. They introduced their animals over the microphone, played some games, then waited in line to have their pictures drawn. We love the result.

Our Big Adventure: Disneyland, Day 2

I don't have as solid a record of this day. Apparently we didn't take as many pictures. So, some of this will be out of order. Possibly.

9:57AM
Day two was our latest start. We had pushed so hard on day one that we were exhausted and needed to sleep. Beyond that, though, Bryan and I had stayed up much later than everyone else trying to figure out what to do about our planned short Disneyland days. We finally learned that we could possibly switch our tickets to the other park. Instead of going to Disneyland on day two, we decided to switch to California Adventure. We were some of the last people to breakfast this time, then we made our way to the parks.

9:59AM
The kids took advantage of the hot chocolate station at the hotel and enjoyed a cup nearly every morning of our visit.

10:12AM
The difference between getting to the parks when they open and coming in a few hours late was kind of major. The security lines were much longer later in the day. Bryan and I were worried we would be told we couldn't change our tickets, but the woman that helped us was super kind and helpful. Apparently we could have changed them on the app, we just didn't know how. With our new plan of a second day at California Adventure officially in place, we went into the park.

11:21AM
According to my pictures our first activity of the day was the Animation Academy. I'm pretty sure we rode the Red Car Trolley either to or from this attraction, so we'll count that too. I love the Animation Academy! When we visited in 2013 we all learned how to draw Agent P from Phineas and Ferb. This time we showed up for a surprise character. It turned out to be Ember from the new movie Elemental. I think we all did pretty well, which is a testament to the skills of the teacher since some of us are artists and some are not. Okay, I'm not, most of the others are. Oh, and Topher dismantled his drawing board instead of drawing, so that was exciting. I successfully reassembled it. Here we have art from

Bryan:

Cooper:

Peter:

Phoebe:

Sophie:

Topher:

and me:

11:36AM
We missed seeing Rodgers the Musical by a few weeks, but you can see the marquee in the background. This was my "what is everyone wearing in case we get separated" picture.

11:44AM
After our art lesson, we cut through the Avengers Campus to get to some rides. On the way we happened to pass Spiderman and quickly lined up to meet him. Bonus: in these two pictures you can see some of the fun backpacks the kids carried on the trip. Cooper's is shaped like Captain America's shield, Phoebe's is Minnie Mouse themed, and Sophie's has princesses on it. Peter still takes his Spiderman bag pretty much everywhere. It holds his Epi-Pen nicely.

11:57AM
We were near the front of the line, so it didn't take too long to get our picture with our favorite web slinger. One of our favorite web slingers, at least. We like Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey a lot too.

12:12PM
The big kids desperately wanted to ride the Incredicoaster again. Since we'd done most of what we wanted the first day, we decided this day we would repeat our favorites. I took the first turn this time while Bryan waited with Topher. They enjoyed some blue cotton candy while we rode and had some to share with the other kids when we got back.

12:15PM

12:19PM

12:23PM
I spy Mr. Incredible near the Incredicoaster. We didn't meet him, but it was cool to see him at a distance.

12:31PM
Peter and Cooper got to ride with Bryan during his run since the girls had gone with me the day before.

12:35PM
I assure you, their poses and facial expressions were all intentional.

1:30PM
After the Incredicoaster poor Topher was near tears since everyone had now gone on a ride except for him. I believe this is when we rode The Little Mermaid, though I'm not 100 percent certain of the timeline. I do know we rode it at some point and that I definitely let my eyes close and my head lean on the tall seat back while we rode. I believe we rode Grizzly River Run next. After spending most of the previous day in wet jeans from this ride, Bryan opted to sit this out while the rest of us rode.

2:08PM
We were finally ready for a late lunch at Smokejumpers Grill, right outside of Soarin' Around the World. It was the best meal we had while visiting the parks! Seriously, it beat out the two fancy places we ate at. Hunger was probably only part of the equation. They had a fantastic gluten free hamburger bun and were extremely mindful of Peter's allergy.

3:10PM
After that we wandered over to the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. We had missed this in 2013 and almost missed it again this time. It's kind of tucked away. It was essentially a big, redwood forest themed nature trail and playground, which is just what Topher needed at that point in the day. We spent a surprisingly long time there. Apparently this attraction is now closed for refurbishment, so I'm glad it was still open when we visited!

3:39PM

3:40PM
Bryan and I took turns keeping watch from a lookout spot. Peter and Cooper shadowed Topher while Phoebe and Sophie stuck together.

3:46PM
The kids enjoyed the rock wall.

3:54PM
Topher and Sophie were able to use the ziplines, but Phoebe was just barely too tall. She was pretty disappointed about that.

3:58PM
This tree segment was massive! According to the accompanying sign, it was 1000 years old when it fell.

4:28PM
After we'd gotten to run and play, we visited Toy Story Midway Mania! again. This one is closed for refurbishment now as well!

4:38PM

I have no pictures of the next attraction, but I wish I did because it was one of my favorites of the day! We went to Turtle Talk with Crush. The guy doing the voice of Crush was hilarious! I was so impressed at his improv skills. Our whole family loved this one.

6:01PM
After chillin' with Crush, we visited the Sorcerer's Workshop.

6:12PM
That led us to the Beast's library! We got to take quizzes to find out which Disney characters we are. Topher learned that he's Winnie the Pooh and Peter and Cooper are apparently like Woody. Bryan got Peter Pan, Phoebe was Sally from Cars, and Sophie was Pocahontas.

6:13PM

6:14PM
Oh, and if you answer a little differently, your result changes. Topher went from Pooh bear to Scar. Sophie became the Queen of Hearts. Phoebe got Ursula from The Little Mermaid. She wasn't thrilled about that.

6:16PM
I'm most like Belle! Well, that makes sense.

6:27PM
We wandered back over to the other side of the park to jump in line for Soarin', that was my repeat request. One of the seat decks was malfunctioning, so it took a while to start. But at least we didn't have to leave the ride and try again like the people in front of us. I do love that ride.

7:33PM
Cooper really wanted to ride Guardians of the Galaxy again (so did I!), but there were no Lightning Lanes left. We decided it was important enough to stand in the long line to ride it. And yes, it was probably the longest line we waited in that day.

7:40PM
Topher was beyond tired and losing his mind a little during the line for this ride, so we broke down and let him watch Disney+ on Bryan's phone. At least we stayed with the Disney theme. Oh! And now you can see Topher's little backpack.

8:21PM

8:23PM
Topher finally crashed and Peter and I traded him back and forth while we were in line. We discovered that this kid can sleep anywhere.

8:46PM
Right as we were ready to board, Peter and Bryan both stepped out of line. Bryan had known the whole time that he didn't want to ride it again, Peter decided part way through. I thought it was nice of them to stay with us anyway. The rest of us loved it and discovered that there are different storylines! It was not the same ride we had been on the day before.

8:49PM
We were dragging and made the choice not to stay until the park closed. We knew we wanted to be at rope drop the next morning. So we slowly walked to the entrance. Actually, we rode the Red Car Trolley several times that day, including at the end, so I guess that ups our ride count.

9:00PM
We took some time to sort of recreate this picture from our 2013 trip.

9:01PM

9:02PM
And we played with our Magic Bands. In theory we could make this medallion light up with the colors of our Bands. It mostly worked.

9:07PM
Peter was Topher's personal chauffeur as we walked back to the hotel. We had missed a few shows and didn't go on the Bakery Tour (one of the attractions listed in the map), but other than those things, we had done everything available at California Adventure, some of them multiple times.

9:28PM
We walked back into our hotel, totally worn out. Again, Topher dropped his stuff and climbed right into bed. Everyone was so tired that it was a little easier to chase them to bed. I set my alarm, looking forward to our first day in the original Disneyland park.
